Welcome Parents!

Your journey begins here!
The Boy Scouts of America (BSA) provides the nation’s foremost youth program of character development and values-based leadership training, which helps young people be “Prepared. For Life.®”. Currently, the BSA organization is composed of approximately 2.2 million youth members between the ages of 5 and 21 and approximately 800,000 volunteers throughout the United States and its territories. Since its inception in 1910, more than 130 million young men and women have participated in the BSA’s youth programs. More than 35 million adult volunteers have helped carry out the BSA’s mission.
The number one priority
The Boy Scouts of America places the greatest importance on creating the most secure environment possible for our youth members. To maintain such an environment, the BSA developed numerous procedural and leadership selection policies and provides parents and leaders with resources for the Scouts. We begin with letting you know that every adult interacting with our scouts has completed the BSA approved Youth Protection Training. In fact, we encourage all parents to complete this training as well. It is FREE and takes about 20-30 minutes. Youth Protection Training is done online at My.Scouting.org. Please complete this soon and let your Committee Chairman know when it's complete!

ScoutBook
You will need to set up a Scoutbook account. We use Scoutbook to communicate with you and your scout. It also is used for advancements and rechartering purposes. You will be able to communicate with your patrol, other parents, and the entire Troop if necessary. Your scout will receive emails as well however you are copied on all communications. Youth Protection Training applies here as well. If you have a BSA assigned ID number be sure to use this number in your profile. We are always happy to help you with this.

Council
We are part of the Connecticut Rivers Council which is a division of Connecticut. Above that is what is referred to as National Council which as you can tell by the name, governs Scouts at the National level. Our Boys Troop is Troop 05B and our Girls Troop is Troop 06G.

Merit Badges
One of the core functions of Scouting is the Merit Badge Program. This allows scouts to explore hundreds of topics of interest. There are core merit badges that a scout needs to rank up to the next level. The Merit Badge Program can help a scout with the age-old question of "What do you want to be when you grow up?". We have a page on this site dedicated to Merit Badges which further explains their role in scouting.

Recharting & Yearly Cost
Rechartering is when Boy Scouts and Adult Leaders re-register for the upcoming year. The Committee will keep you posted and provide the information for payments each year. This cost can vary year-to-year and is a once-a-year fee (very similar to sports). In 2022 it was @ $135.00 per Scout and @ $60.00 per Adult Leader

Volunteer Opportunities
With our troops, any adult can join the Committee an any time or attend the committee meeting with no obligation. The current incumbent of almost all of the positions that become available, will also become the mentor for you. It is always considered “on the job training” as we continue to learn ourselves as each day passes. Most of the time you will be leaned upon for about 2 hours a month and many times even less than that. There is something for everyone that wants to contribute at every level of commitment, anyone partaking in a leadership role must complete Youth Protection Training (above) but not every position requires “training”. If in fact the position does require training, that training helps to further explain the Scouting program and your new role as an involved Adult Leader. Ask as many questions as you like as we are here to help.
